Functional Medicine 101: Treating the Root Cause

Feb 18, 20256 min read

Conventional medicine asks: "What disease do you have, and which drug treats it?" Functional medicine asks a different question: "Why is your body producing these symptoms, and what upstream factors do we need to address?" Both approaches have their place. Knowing when to use which can save you years of trial-and-error.

What functional medicine actually means

A functional medicine visit looks at your full timeline — diet, sleep, stress, environmental exposures, hormonal patterns, gut function, and family history. The goal isn't to replace your prescription medications. It's to understand what's driving the symptom and treat the underlying mechanism alongside any necessary medication.

  • Persistent fatigue not explained by basic labs
  • Recurring digestive issues — bloating, reflux, IBS-type symptoms
  • Hormonal symptoms — heavy periods, low libido, mood swings
  • Autoimmune flares or unexplained inflammation
  • Difficulty losing weight despite diet and exercise

When urgent care is the right call

Functional medicine is not a substitute for acute care. Fever, infection, injury, severe pain, or anything that needs a same-day answer should go straight to urgent care — virtual or in-person. Use root-cause care for the patterns that have been there for months or years and aren't responding to symptom-only treatment.

At ROX we offer both. You can book a same-day urgent visit for a UTI on Monday, and a 60-minute functional intake on Friday to dig into why you've had four UTIs this year. The two work together — acute care stops the fire, root-cause care looks at why it keeps starting.

Ask your provider whether a functional intake makes sense for your situation. If your symptoms are chronic, vague, or have bounced between specialists without resolution, it's often the right next step.
